“The fastest way to get rich quick is to get rich slow.” Brief but definitely noteworthy, these were the words of Mr. Francisco J. Colayco during the ‘RAISING KIDS AS GOOD LEARNERS and BUILDING YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE’—a Mother’s Day special seminar at 5th Floor, NBS Superbranch, Cubao, Quezon City, last Saturday, April 30 at 2:30pm. This event was in partnership with National Bookstore, Anvil Publishing and Colayco Foundation for Education Inc.
Majority of the attendees were Mothers and there were some Dads who accompanied their wives. Mr. Colayco started his talk on giving savings tips for mothers. He cited an example of which he asked the audience if it is worth buying a dress on sale from 3000 down to 1000 and soon identified that it is the wrong kind of saving. Mr. Colayco went on discussing that it is an obligation to be wealthy and it is easy. “We cannot share what we don’t have.” Great emphasis was placed on 80% on expenses, 20% on savings. The proper way to achieve this 80-20 rule is to pay one’s self first and not hope that there will be surplus from a month’s expenses. He also touched the importance of awareness of where one is. It must be clear also where we want to go, how we will get there and when we want to achieve our goal. He gave a brief discussion on various investment instruments with emphasis on pooled funds and highlighted that there are actually other ways to invest money other than just putting it in a savings account or time deposit.
Prior to Mr. Colayco’s discussion, Professor Queena Lee-Chua tackled some issues concerning the importance of parental guidance in the learning process of children. She cited anecdotes on how a very select few in the Ateneo achieved consistent honors without having the aid of tutors. These students had significant time with their parents on a regular basis to check on what they don’t understand in the lessons in school. “You don’t need to study everything everyday. You have to teach your kids to study smart,” Prof Lee-Chua pointed out.
Refreshments and snacks were served, courtesy of Angels pizza pasta combo. Other sponsors were Dial, SM cinemas, Faber- Castell, San Miguel Great Food Club, San Mig Coffee, Working Mom and Netopia.
At the end of the seminar, questions were entertained, together with book signing and attendees had the opportunity to take pictures with Mr. Colayco. It was definitely a good early Mother’s Day treat to all Moms who attended!
