June 19, 2010 - Three Inspiring Stories of Dads

It’s so inspiring to listen to the stories of those people who have read Wealth Within Your Reach, our other books and those who have attended our workshops.

Two police officers attended our workshops 2 years ago.  One already has a business and his wife is the one managing it.  His wife, though did not attend the workshop, but was able to read the books of Mr. Colayco.  “Running a business is difficult” according to the spouse.  “But at least, we know that this business is becoming stable and we are happy running this business.”  Not everyone succeeds in setting up a business, but if you have the passion and the skills in what you are doing, then you have been better chances of success.

The other police officer, bought a few hectares of land in a province and he let the locals cultivate it, thus giving employment.  He got a franchise to operate a Utility Vehicle (UV) and this gave him the additional income to augment what he currently receives.  According to this second police officer, he would never result to “kotong” because he knows he is secured financially.  “The income that will be generated eventually will be put in investments and in expansion.”

The third dad is an employee who attended one of the inhouse seminars we did with their company.  He is very proud to let us know that his net worth increased by more than 1000%.  He used to be negative in his SAL but now he is very much positive.  And currently, he is looking at the stock market to further grow his assets.

If you have a similar story, we would appreciate hearing from you.  We want to impart your success stories to inspire others and to let people know that it is not difficult to become wealthy.  Do email info@colaycofoundation.com.

June 18, 2010 - Friday Night-Out Learning About the Stock Market

Fridays are usually spent hanging out with friends to de-stress after a weeklong day at work.  But last June 18, Colayco Foundation and the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) Market Education Department gave a very informative seminar on the stock market.

This time, the rain did not pour despite the dark clouds that afternoon.  People started coming as early as 5pm.  They were excited and we too were excited to once again bring the Investability Seminar Series: The Stock Market.  This is our second run and more runs to come as long as the need is there.

CFE’s Executive Director Armand Bengco gave an overview for the new attendees on the right mindset on how to management investment funds.  Attendees came from as far as Taytay Rizal, Cavite, Binan and Calamba, Laguna.  The other speaker, Mr. Jay Penaflor, is a Senior Specialist of the PSE Market Education Department.

This seminar is a non-technical discussion about the stock market and it gives the basics needed to answer the questions what, when, where, who and how.  It’s really that easy!  But of course, you will have to set your goals first before investing.

There are many misconceptions about investing in the stock market.  The seminar is an eye-opener to learn about the stock market.  If you also want to discover more, attend our next run in July.  Wealth is really within reach to those people who are informed, have the discipline and are decided and determined to be wealthy!  Are you?

June 12, 2010 - An Independence Day Celebration with Colayco Foundation

June 12 was a working holiday because June 14 was declared a non-working holiday. Holiday or not, the Pera Mo Palaguin Mo Workshop had a very very good attendence.  And it was attended by the likes of Tony Tony, Slick Rick & Sam YG (Boys Night Out / Magic 89.9), Karla Henry (Ms. Earth 2008), Diana Menesez (Eat Bulaga), and Mikee Lee (PBB Teens). I’m wondering who will attend the next run?  Hmmm….

The workshop is a means for you to determine where you are now in terms of your personal finance.  This is key to understand and peg where you are going.  It helps the participants determine their target retirement fund and how to achieve it.  It also gives the different financial instruments that will be fit your goals and your risk profile.

This workshop is brought to you by the Colayco Foundation for Education, Rapha Health, FAMI Save & Learn Mutual Fund, Businessworld, Herword.com, Bulgar, Vacation Thrills & Frills, Mijac Construction, and Kapatiran sa Kasaganaan Service & Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

The Best Food for Baby is (Almost) Free

By: Irene Abara

Irene Abara is a devoted wife and stay at home mom to a 3 year old boy.  She is an advocate of extended breastfeeding, a believer of homeopathic medicine, prefers organic produce and a few more unconventional things here and there.  As such, she doesn’t mind being tagged “uncanny” as she recently realized that she was wired uniquely for a greater purpose. Here’s another article from her. Enjoy reading! If you want to contribute articles, email info@colaycofoundation.com.

We hardly felt the expense of feeding a baby or a toddler that I thought it would be great to share to mothers and families who are looking out to save money (and I mean thousands!) what we did.

It is a challenge to make feeding decisions in this internet savvy era as most parents are drowned by an inevitable overload of information thrown their way. I don’t think our parents had to weigh several options back then – they pretty much relied on media for information, which up to today continue to promote misconceptions such as: some mothers don’t have milk or giving formula will make your child gifted (both are not true at all!). If parents had enough, then babies survived on the most expensive formula their pockets could shell out. And for those who aren’t privileged, the babies end up – well, malnourished or they die, literally!

But the beauty of the global village that we are in now opens minds, despite the confusion it brings. The option to breastfeed has resurfaced and is backed by a tremendous amount of literature explaining why it is nutritionally superior, also correcting misconceptions, and helping moms to overcome problems like low milk supply while breastfeeding. And this is how I decided and succeeded to do extended breastfeeding, which also equated to being the most economical choice. It practically cost us nothing! A news article a few years ago reported that an average Filipino family spends an average of P2K a month for formula. Depending on your financial status or your baby’s sensitivities, some spend P5k and even P10k in the interest of providing “the best”. On an annual computation, this would amount to P24k, P60k, and P120k respectively and could be higher as the price of commercial milk normally rises as the child grows older. And the savings don’t stop there, as formula feeding will require you to buy feeding bottles, nipples, sterilizers and vitamin supplements (breastfed babies don’t need water or supplements from birth to 6 months). All these money could go instead to other important things, such as food, education or even to your savings account.

Supplementing with solids six months onwards, we prepared homemade baby food by pureeing or mashing (if you don’t have a blender) a variety of boiled or steamed vegetables with brown rice porridge. Homemade baby food allows us to make our babies and their food adapt to a typical Asian/Filipino staple which is rice, as opposed to bottled apple sauce. The last time I checked, a bottle of Gerber would cost around P50 which could easily amount to P150/per day or could even be P250/per day if you include the snacks twice daily. At P150 daily, this would total to a whopping P4,200.00 monthly. Tell you what, for a small family of three living on a plant-based diet most of the time, we only spend an average of P3,000.00 monthly on vegetables and fruits. Since babies don’t eat meat yet until they are a little older and when they do, the amount they eat is hardly noticeable, you will not feel any increase in your market expenditures for about a year or so. What accounts for the huge difference in amount? Just think of all the additional costs that are absorbed by the parents when buying commercial baby food products which include packaging, shipping, marketing plus mark ups before it reaches the local grocery store. Think of the impact it also has on our planet with all the packaging and fuel it needs to produce and arrive at our tables. More importantly, fresh food tastes way better and healthier compared to bottled counterparts. This means that building healthy feeding habits also help us save on doctor fees and medicines.

I hope that by sharing my experience, I have convinced many parents out there that providing the best for our babies doesn’t necessarily mean affording expensive commercial formula and food. You can be confident that mother’s free milk and local produce for your babies and toddlers happens to be the best there is too! And let’s not forget that by choosing this path, we are not only doing our kids a favor, we are also being kind to our planet.

Happy Kids for Less
By: Irene Abara

Here is an article by Irene Abara de Leon who has so kindly shared her tips related to her household and her kid in the past. We can learn a lot in creative ways that at the same time help in saving. Enjoy!

I recently attended an exposition for kids with my three year old son in tow and witnessed how numerous creative moms have turned into mom-preneurs today. You don’t have to be a genius to presume that their businesses began as a hobbies (commonly crafts), for their little ones, honed them and turned them into budding businesses. The same venue also played host to various summer programs to keep the kids happy and busy during the coming vacation months.

Later that morning, my son excitedly reached home with two “happy hermit” crabs to be his pets. An enterprising mom painted and decorated their shells so beautifully as pirates, Donald duck, bears, and mice … there was no end to the designs. Not to worry, I made sure to inquire if she only painted the shells and didn’t harm the helpless little creatures in the process.

Closely observing the hermits, I am constantly amazed at how cute they are and what a clever, clever idea it was to paint their shells and give them a face! It led me to brood over thoughts of how any mom or dad out there could be more imaginative (whether innately creative or not), or at least resourceful enough to save money this coming summer vacation instead of spending for programs averaging P500 per session. Many of these program’s activities are doable at home with some research, patience and an open mind. Over the top of my head, I could recall simple but toddler fun proof activities which my son and I enjoyed doing and continue to do when the mood strikes. I planned these activities for him along the philosophy of Dr. William Sears (my favorite author of parenting books) who said, children must spend some time during their day to do free play, arts, music, reading and outdoor play.

Free Play – I allow my son to spend some part of his day to do with whatever he pleases (within reasonable bounds, of course), mostly using toys. And if there is one money-saving tip I’d like to share when it comes to toys -- No, not to shop at Divisoria for cheap toys but to be discriminating in the quality of toys we buy. Nowadays, parents hardly need to make any second thoughts on toys made in China and are often tempted to come home with a pile. Within a few minutes under exploring minds and hands, you also end up with the same pile for the garbage -- toys with broken parts and most likely, a frustrated tearful toddler. And then again, imagine all that money you spent, no matter how meager the amount -- literally thrown away. Buy quality toys over quantity and this will save you money in the long run. They will last long, can be handed down to siblings or relatives and will even be worth some money sold at a garage sale.

Painting – I spent less than P100.00 on one trip to the bookstore to get a set of 6 primary color paints and a few brushes. Apart from painting pictures, together we learned to mix the colors we had at hand to produce secondary colors (red mixed with white make pink, etc.). Combining colors and experimenting with them alone is an educational and fun activity in itself which you can do over and over again for a measly amount.

Arts and Crafts – The internet has a wealth of arts and crafts ideas that are age appropriate and developmentally appropriate. Favor the craft ideas that use recyclable materials and other odds and ends around the house. This will help you three-fold. First to de clutter, teach your kids to care for the environment and to save money on craft supplies. Egg trays make nice caterpillars and milk/juice cartons can be made into trains when connected together.

Music Time – You can download for free several children’s songs from the internet. You’ll be surprised that while some of them are heartwarming and educational, others are silly tunes that will guarantee laughing and unforgettable moments! Just make sure that you are not infringing on any copyrighted material when downloading.

Reading – You don’t have to be creative to read to your child but good books can be pricey and sourcing them is where you could use some patience and resourcefulness. We enjoy reading and there is a long list of great books for kids. I frequent discount bookstores (Books for Less, Book Sale, etc) and am usually able to find popular books as well as Caldecott Honor books at one fifth the cost when purchased at regular bookstores. Fun character workbooks are also available for school age children beginning to read and write. And guess what’s even better? I wait for them to go on sale, often at 50% off and get the books for one tenth the original retail price. Though, some of them may need some dusting and wiping but who cares? That won’t cost you anything.

Outdoor Play – Several indoor play rooms charge between P170 to P350 an hour and are often located inside the malls. Check for nearby parks that allow your kids to experience “real outdoor” fun instead of inevitably turning them into little mall rats. The sun, wind, trees and birds (which they could feed while there) are free gifts of nature which educate the kids as well.

Along the way, you’ll find that by carrying out these activities, not only do our kids grow and make meaningful discoveries, but we parents are also able to reconnect with our creative side. And who knows? A clever idea might just be born like that of the “happy hermits.” Not only are we saving money, we may just learn how to make it too.

Palm Sunday Reflection

This morning, Mrs. Colayco texted me to tune in to Channel 4 in case we were just home.  While working on our website, I turned on the television and tuned in to the 14th Palm Sunday Family Recollection.  It was a morning of sharing and a celebration of life.

God is truly good. It is just a matter of opening OUR hearts to really feel and accept how much He loves us.  The sharing of Fr. Orly Sapuay was really very funny and everyone was really laughing out loud.  Tama siya, kaya tumatawa ang lahat dahil lahat ng sinasabi niya ay nararanasan ng bawat isa.

Change must really come from within.  If you want to do something about your situation right now, you don’t need to change other people, but change yourself…maybe change your attitude or behavior or change the way you look at things.  Then the rest will follow.

He shared that when he was assigned in Christ the King in Quezon City, he usually went there 5:00pm for his 5:30pm mass.  And every once in a while the phone would ring.  People on the other line would ask the same question “what time is the mass?”  One even asked, “what time will the 5:30pm mass start?”  Sabi niya, buwisit na buwisit siya na sagutin ang bawat tawag, kasi pare-pareho lang ang tinatanong.

One Sunday afternoon, he prepared his homily and changed how he perceived the callers.  He answered the phone is a positive way and approached each call as a form of ministry by being friendly to the caller.  He shared, gained more friends and turned each phone call as a tool to spread the word of God.

He is right. Change must really come from us!

As he ended he shared the following:

  1. free you hearts from hatred;

  2. free your minds from worries;

  3. free yourself from criticism, negativism, blaming and complaining;  and

  4. live simply so that you can simply live.  The problem is not your income, but your expenses.  Greed can never be moderated; so don’t be greedy.  Give more….give more love, understanding, compassion and care.

The “other sharings” were really eye opening.  God really works in mysterious ways.  The recollection ended with the blind twins.  This recollection is a constant reminder of how much God loves me.  I have my eyes to see, my ears to hear, my mouth to speak, my tongue to taste, my nose to breathe air, my hands to touch and my feet to walk.  Most of all, I have my brain to think and share my know-how and my heart to LOVE.

Kung tutuusin, wala akong matatawag na kapansanan and I thank God for this blessing.  Thank you for my family, for my daughter, for my work, and for my friends.  It is my commitment to continue on with our advocacy and continue to change lives of Filipinos with this advocacy.

Workshop with Tricycle Drivers Association in Parola

Most invitations to the Colayco Foundation are for in-house seminars and workshops, as well as talks for different organizations and institutions.  Last March 26, 2010, we had the opportunity to provide financial literacy to tricycle drivers in Parola, Tondo.  Thank you to International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) for sponsoring this workshop, which will take part of its Livelihood Program for their community.

ICTSI understood that skills in livelihood can easily be learned and are available but the proper mindset in handling finances and becoming entrepreneurs is necessary for the success of “would be entrepreneurs.”

After the 4-hour workshop, the tricycle drivers are excited to start a saving program that will, in-turn, open up opportunities for them to leverage as a group and to earn more.  Other companies with CSR programs for their community are open to inquire about Colayco Foundation’s financial literacy programs.  Do get in touch with Ms. Joni Jocson, Managing Director at 6373731 or 41 or email joni@colaycofoundation.com.

CFE Team Preach Priests

Personal finance is a universal concern. May you be an engineer or a priest, money is your concern. Last March 15, 2010 the Colayco Foundation team headed by its Founder and Chairman Francisco J. Colayco, was invited to the annual general assembly of Bahay Pari Credit Cooperative, to teach the priests of the power of cooperativism through personal finance. The priests were enlightened as they discovered  that leverage or pooling of funds can help not just their cooperative but also themselves to grow and be financially independent.

January 15, 2010 - PSEI Seen Searching 3, 800 in second half

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) is expected to reach the 3,800 level in the second half due to a resurgent US economy and as more companies go public, First Metro Investment Corp. said on Monday.

“Any initial public offering (IPO) would be welcome in the first half. But we are expecting IPOs [to take place] in the second half of the year as many companies are still waiting for the elections [to finish]," Eduardo R. Banaag, Jr., FMIC vice-president for investment advisory, told a press briefing.

Companies held back from listing stocks for the first time last year due to lingering market uncertainties, which resulted in relatively low share prices.

According the Metrobank Group’s investment banking arm, the Philippine Stock Exchange index would likely rise by a tenth to 3,360 in the first half, as a result of low interest rates and as US stocks recover.

Banaag said the US economy would continue to recover, boosted by the Obama administration's stimulus spending. And as it recovers and the profits of listed companies rebound, the Standard and Poor’s 500 index could rise to 1,225, he added.

US stocks managed to end the first trading week in positive territory, with the Dow industrials and S&P 500 at 15-month highs and the NASDAQ composite at a 16-month high.

The PSEi closed at 3,087.35 yesterday. It ended 2009 at 3,052.68, rising by almost two-thirds from a year earlier

“The influence of the US stock market on the Philippine stock market will persist," Banaag said.

He noted that in the past, the rise and fall of the US stock market had accounted for as much as three-quarters of the rise and fall of local share prices.

He said he does not expect a major policy decision taking place in the first half that would alter the low interest rate environment in the US.

For his part, FMIC President Francisco C. Sebastian said more companies would get listed as soon as the the law giving incentives to real estate investment trusts gets enforced. Its implementing rules are still pending.

Corporate issuances, on the other hand, are expected to slow down this year, siad Carmelo L. Bautista, FMIC executive director.

“We foresee a a slowdown in the corporate issuances by the second quarter because of the wait-and-see posture due to the elections in May," he said.

Meanwhile, the law that encourages individuals to invest for their retirement would likely boost local capital markets, Sebastian said.

Under the enacted in August 2008, individuals can set aside as much as P100,000 a year in a personal retirement account, and the funds will be invested in a wide range of instruments. — BusinessWorld
