Handling personal finances is commonly not a part of the educational curriculum in the Philippines. Most of the time, kidults (a portmanteau of kid and adult) are unable to manage their personal finances while parents often end up dependent to their children at old age. These kidults will then end up joining the workforce being financially literate. There are many young professionals "yuppies" with stable income but are unable to save; their mindset being "to earn and to spend".

To develop the value of financial literacy, it is important to start training the kidults at a young age. It would be more effective if students at the tertiary level will be provided with such training since in a few years or months, they will be joining the income-earning segment of society.

Together with the Citigroup Foundation, we at the Colayco Foundation for Education, Inc. (CFE) assert that all college graduating students should have the skills to take individual responsibility in taking care of their personal finances. To develop the value of financial literacy, kidults at the tertiary level should be provided a financial literacy training since in a few months or years, they will be joining the income-earning segment of society. CFE seek to improve the financial skills of these students thru this program.

The project HATCH: A Kidult's Guide to Managing Personal Finance is a two-hour program that will be conducted for FREE on August and November 2007. The program will focus on four aspects: 1) spending, 2) saving, 3) planning, and 4) investing, and will be implemented by CFE with close supervision from and coordination with Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP). The interactive CD that comes with this HATCHing kit is especially developed for kidults to further their understanding of financial independence.

FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

A typical college student saves his allowance for certain wants: apparel, cell phone load, internet/PC gaming, and night-outs. Although the instinct to save is present, everything is set for the short term. While most of them are fast approaching the end of their collegiate years, few have a grasp of the concept of saving and the necessary skills for managing their personal finances. As professionals, most end up overspending for wants rather than needs, their mindset being “to earn and to spend”.

Managing personal finances is an important life skill, though it is not part of any curriculum in the Philippine educational system. The earlier our youth will learn about this, the better their chances are of a comfortable and secure life in 20 to 30 years.

HATCH, a program of the Colayco Foundation for Education Inc. (CFE) and supported by the Citigroup Foundation, seeks to enhance the financial literacy of the typical student and widen their eyes on the subject of why and how to save for the future. The HATCH seminars are open to all graduating students of participating Metro Manila universities within the month of August. Scheduled also are seminars in 5 Cebu universities in November.

HATCH seminars were conducted in the following schools: St. Paul's Manila University, Ateneo de Manila University, College of St. Benilde, Phlippine Women's University, Far Eastern Uiversity, University of Santo Tomas, Colegio San Juan de Letran, National University, University of the Philippines, San Beda College and Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

The next run will be this November in the following Cebu schools: UP Cebu, Southwestern University, University of Visayas, Cebu Normal University, Cebu Institute of Medicine, University of Cebu and University of San Carlos. For more details contact your Student Affairs Office.
